In 1868, the Central Pacific Railroad built a line about a mile east of present-day Elk Grove. The town remained a small farming community with little urban development until the late 1980’s. As the city of Sacramento stretched southward, the north part of Elk Grove established housing tracts for urban commuters and lead to development of a thriving local businesses community.

Elk Grove was designed for families who enjoy outdoor living. The city has more than 90 parks--more than two per square mile. Elk Grove Regional Park is one of the oldest and popular parks in the area, and it has been a gathering place since the late 1800’s. The land was sold in 1903 and its ancient oak trees were destined for the lumber mill.
Instead, Jennie McConnell came upon the felling of trees and dedicated herself to saving the woodland. She and her father created a corporation and sold shares at $5 to purchase the land and turn it into a park. The community later built an open-air dance platform, baseball diamond and horse trough.
